The Green Man is an ancient symbol found throughout the world. It is symbolized by faces or masks made of leaves and other foliage. Some may even depict the leaves, branches, or vines growing out of the mouth, nose, and eyes. The Green Man is thought to symbolize rebirth (as in the new growth that appears in Spring). It can be found as an architectural decoration in both secular and religious buildings. The face is almost always male, there are a few examples of Green Women, but they are very rare.
